Shelter Closures Force Pet Relocation to Bishop Location; Community Urged to Reunite with Lost Pets
Following Hurricanes Helene and Milton, local animal shelters have temporarily closed, leading to a critical relocation effort for displaced pets. The Palmetto Adoption Center, which sustained damage during Hurricane Milton, has moved all dogs to the Bishop location at 5718 21st Avenue West in Bradenton. The influx of lost pets combined with limited space has prompted an urgent appeal to pet owners to visit the Bishop location to reunite with their family members.
An extended stray hold policy is now in effect, allowing the shelter to hold cats and dogs for up to 14 days to provide additional time for owners to locate and reclaim their pets. The Bishop shelter’s hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Residents who have lost pets or wish to offer support are encouraged to visit or contact the shelter directly for more information. For assistance, call (941) 742-5933 or 311. Your prompt action can make a difference in reuniting pets with their families during this challenging recovery period.
