Proposed Bradenton-Palmetto Corridor Raises Concerns for Historic Braden Castle Park
Residents of Braden Castle Park, a designated U.S. Historic District, are voicing concerns over a proposed Bradenton-Palmetto connector corridor that could impact their beloved community. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is exploring options for the new corridor to reduce traffic congestion and improve hurricane evacuation routes. Still, potential routes could alter the neighborhood's historic charm.
Between the Manatee and Braden Rivers, Braden Castle Park is home to nearly 200 homes, a mobile home neighborhood, and an RV park. It also contains the ruins of the 1850 Braden Mansion, a significant piece of local history.
Concerned about the possible impact, residents gathered in the community’s historic Leisure Hall on Tuesday afternoon for an open forum with FDOT representatives and developers. The meeting, organized by community members, provided an opportunity to discuss potential sites for the ten-mile corridor. While FDOT confirmed the need for a new structure to address traffic and evacuation challenges, no final decision regarding the corridor’s location has been made.
Residents emphasized preserving the community for future generations, advocating for alternatives that would not disrupt the historic district. FDOT, however, did not officially sanction the informal meeting and declined media interviews.
