Manatee County Voters Urged to Renew Millage for Continued Success in Schools
Manatee County residents are being called upon to vote “YES” on #7, renewing the 1-mill ad valorem tax that has significantly boosted the local school district since its initial approval in 2018. The referendum, which is not a new tax, extends the funding that has played a pivotal role in improving student performance, increasing teacher and staff pay, and expanding vital educational programs.
The 1-mill tax has been instrumental in keeping Manatee County schools competitive with surrounding districts such as Sarasota, Pinellas, and Charlotte, all of which have similar voter-approved funding. Since the millage was first passed, the district has seen a rise in student achievement across the board, particularly in reading and math scores for grades 3-10. Additionally, the number of district schools earning an "A" rating has grown to 20, the most since 2012.
Beyond academic success, the millage has also enabled the county to attract and retain high-quality teachers and staff. Since 2018, starting teacher pay has jumped from $38,892 to $57,572, and annual supplements for experienced teachers have more than doubled. Other essential staff members, including bus drivers, custodians, and food service workers, have also seen significant pay increases.
The renewal of this millage is vital for the continuation of several key programs, including school safety, early literacy, STEM education, and the visual and performing arts. The funds also support public charter schools and ensure that students have access to more instructional time and career and technical education opportunities.
If approved, the millage will be renewed from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2029. An independent citizen oversight committee will continue to monitor how the funds are spent to ensure transparency and accountability.
