Manatee County Launches Hope Card Program for Domestic Violence Victims
Individuals in Manatee County who have been issued final injunctions for protection can now apply for a free Hope Card, providing convenient and quick access to proof of their protective order. This initiative, launched by the Manatee County Clerk of Court & Comptroller, coincides with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, offering a new tool to help ensure the safety of those facing threats of domestic violence, stalking, or similar dangers.
The Hope Card is a wallet-sized card created in partnership with the Florida Attorney General’s Office and the Florida Court Clerks & Comptrollers. It simplifies the process of verifying protective orders for law enforcement, eliminating the need for individuals to carry bulky legal documents. This is particularly vital for those displaced or impacted by emergencies such as Hurricanes Helene and Milton, as quick access to proof of protection can be crucial in times of crisis.
With over 900 protective injunctions filed last year in Manatee County alone, the Hope Card aims to provide additional security to those at risk. The card includes essential information such as the names and birth dates of the protected person and the respondent, the case number, and the expiration date of the order. Valid for two years or until the protective order expires, the card can be renewed if necessary.
Those eligible for a Hope Card can apply easily, either by visiting the Clerk’s office or filling out the form provided in the final injunction for protection packet. The card is available in both physical and digital formats, making it accessible for immediate use.
The program was made possible by legislation passed during the 2024 session, with leadership from Sen. Lauren Book and Rep. Mike Gottlieb. It reflects a statewide effort to strengthen support for victims of domestic violence and other forms of intimidation, ensuring they have a critical tool for protection when they need it most.
