Longboat Key Launches New Hurricane Re-Entry Program with Decal System
Longboat Key, FL — Longboat Key officials are rolling out a new hurricane re-entry program aimed at speeding up post-storm recovery and reducing long wait times at checkpoints.
The new system, developed by Interim Police Chief Frank Rubino, replaces the previous manual ID check process with a color-coded decal program designed for residents, business owners, and essential workers. The goal: get people back on the island safely and efficiently after a storm.
Rubino, who has worked through hurricanes since 1980, says the new system is based on lessons learned from years of storm response delays. “It’s quicker than the system we had before, which didn’t work for us,” Rubino said, citing the hours-long backups experienced in past storms.
Under the new plan, vehicles displaying the appropriate decals will be allowed through without having to stop for ID checks:
Tier 1: Emergency responders (no decal required)
Tier 2 (Green Decal): Relief workers, health care providers, insurance agents, and key recovery businesses like Ace Hardware
Tier 3 (Red Decal): Residents and other business owners
Decals are now being distributed by the Longboat Key Police Department. They must be placed inside the vehicle, clearly visible but not obstructing the VIN or placed behind tinted windows.
Rubino emphasized the importance of early awareness. “We want people to understand the process now so they’re not caught off guard when a storm hits,” he said.
To qualify for a decal, individuals must be a Longboat Key resident, essential worker, or business owner. For more information or to obtain a decal, contact the Longboat Key Police Department directly.
