Health Alerts Issued for Red Tide in Manatee County Beaches
Bradenton, FL – The Florida Department of Health in Manatee County has issued health alerts for red tide at Bradenton Beach and Coquina Beach South Boat Ramp. An earlier alert for Rod and Reel Pier on Anna Maria Island, issued on November 15, 2024, remains in effect. Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution in these areas to protect their health and safety.
Red tide, a harmful algal bloom, can pose significant risks to humans, animals, and the environment. The public is advised to follow these precautions:
Avoid Water Contact: Do not swim or wade in red tide-affected waters, as it can cause skin irritation, rashes, and burning or sore eyes. If contact occurs, wash skin and clothing with soap and fresh water.
Protect Indoor Air Quality: Residents living near beaches should close windows and run air conditioners with properly maintained filters to reduce exposure to airborne toxins.
Food Safety: Avoid harvesting or eating molluscan shellfish or distressed or dead fish from affected areas. Finfish that are caught alive and healthy are safe to eat if filleted, with guts discarded. Always rinse fillets with tap or bottled water before cooking.
Animal Safety: Red tide can harm or kill pets and livestock. Keep animals away from the water, sea life, and dead marine life. If a pet swims in affected waters, wash them with soap and water immediately.
Red tide toxins can exacerbate respiratory conditions, such as asthma, in vulnerable individuals. Visitors and residents are encouraged to monitor beach conditions through the Protecting Florida Together website or signage at public beaches.
By staying informed and following these guidelines, the community can minimize the health risks associated with red tide.
