Bradenton Woman Charged with Murder in Fatal Overdose Case
Ellenton, FL – A Bradenton woman has been charged with murder following a months-long investigation into the January overdose death of a 35-year-old Ellenton man.
Brianne Zaffina, 33, was served a warrant on November 13 while incarcerated at the Manatee County Jail on unrelated charges. According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit, Zaffina violated Florida State Statute 782.04 (1)(a)3, which defines murder as the unlawful distribution of controlled substances resulting in death.
Deputies responded to a call on January 8, 2024, at approximately 6:45 p.m. in the 1000 block of Royal Palm Drive, Ellenton. Upon arrival, they found EMS personnel attempting life-saving measures on a male victim. Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead 20 minutes later.
An autopsy revealed that the victim died from intoxication involving Carfentanil, Fentanyl, and Alprazolam, with the Medical Examiner confirming that either the Fentanyl or Carfentanil alone would have been fatal.
Investigators collected evidence from the victim’s home and conducted interviews, which revealed Zaffina’s presence at the residence the night before the incident. Through further analysis of phone records, text messages, and DNA evidence, detectives concluded that Zaffina sold the lethal substances to the victim.
The investigation remains active, with authorities continuing to gather evidence. This case underscores the ongoing fight against the devastating impact of opioid distribution in the community.
