Anna Maria Island community rallies around family of 3-month-old baby battling rare disease
At just over three months old, River has faced more challenges than some adults will ever encounter. Born on March 30 to Mackenzie and Jonathan Anasis, River was a happy and healthy baby boy. However, things took a drastic turn when he fell ill at two months old, starting with a 103-degree fever.
River was admitted to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, where his condition rapidly deteriorated. He contracted Rhinovirus and Enterovirus, developed sepsis, and suffered acute liver failure. His blood count levels plummeted, prompting doctors to search for answers. After two weeks in the hospital, River was diagnosed with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare genetic immune deficiency disorder.
The severity of River's condition was underscored when a nurse suggested the family speak with a priest. Despite the grim prognosis, River showed remarkable resilience. His days have been filled with hospital visits, blood tests, and medications, enduring more medical procedures than many adults.
As River's parents stayed by his side, their community on Anna Maria Island rallied to support them. Family friend and organizer Karen Harllee spearheaded efforts to help, recognizing the hard work and positive spirit of Mackenzie and Jonathan, who are well-known at the local Waterfront restaurant.
The community's support quickly grew, with the Center of Anna Maria Island and local businesses organizing a benefit event to aid River and his family during this challenging time. "It's something not a lot of people know about, and there needs to be more research to support these families," said Harllee, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and support for HLH.
River needs a bone marrow transplant to survive, and while he has two potential matches, they are only 9/10 compatible. The family is hopeful for a perfect match.
"We’re not giving up hope, especially with the amazing support from our community," Mackenzie said. "I was amazed and shocked by the love and support we've received. The whole island coming together is truly incredible."
The benefit event, "Rise Up for River," will be held on Saturday, July 13, at The Center of Anna Maria Island from 3-7 p.m. at 407 Magnolia Avenue. The event will feature live music, food, and a raffle. Additionally, the family has set up a GoFundMe page for those who wish to contribute to River's fight.
